One of the first things people notice about you is your smile. A beautiful smile can brighten your life socially and professionally. It can give you confidence and make you feel happy, self assured and positive.
How do you rate your smile?
- Do you avoid smiling broadly?
- Do you cover your mouth when you talk, laugh or smile?
- Do you feel self-conscious when you smile?
- Do you hate close-up shots that show your teeth?
- Do you notice your teeth are discoloured, or not as white as they used to be?
- Do you have a moustache or beard to hide your smile?
If any of these relate to how you feel, Robert Duhig Dental can help!
Our full range of cosmetic dentistry services can really make a difference to your appearance and confidence.
Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers are the most popular procedure used in ‘smile makeovers’. They can rectify and improve teeth that are:
- small or misshaped
- worn or chipped
- discoloured or stained
- spaced too far apart
The procedure can involve restoring any tooth structure that has been lost, or reshaping the teeth to improve the whole smile. Veneers also protect teeth from further acid wear damage.
Veneers are very thin slivers of porcelain (shaped a bit like a fingernail), that are bonded onto your tooth. We often place temporary veneers on for a few weeks to establish a blueprint for your new smile. The permanent veneers can then be fine-tuned to perfection.
Ceramic Crowns
Crowns are used to restore teeth that have been broken, or weakened by decay or by being heavily filled. Crowns are also used on root-treated teeth to protect them from fracturing or vertically splitting.
Types of Crowns
Robert Duhig Dental uses three different types of crowns.
- Ceramic bonded to precious metal crowns
This is the most common type of crown. It uses a precious metal base to which porcelain is applied in layers until it looks like a tooth from a conversational distance. It is typically used on back teeth because it is strong and because cosmetic concerns are less important in this area of the mouth.
- Ceramic crowns
This type of crown is the most popular of all cosmetic restorations because the end result looks so natural. They aren’t as strong as ceramic bonded to precious metal crowns, so are mostly used on front teeth where grinding in minimal and cosmetic concerns are more important.
- Precious metal crowns
Gold crowns are very strong and hard wearing which makes them ideal for people who grind or clench their teeth, especially the back ones. The cost of gold has increased considerably in recent years, which makes this type of crown more expensive
What does the procedure involve?
The outer surface of your tooth will be shaped and reduced, leaving a core in the middle. The crown will be a similar shape to your original tooth as it restores what has been reduced.
Impressions of the prepared tooth and the opposite jaw will be taken and the dental technician will use these to produce a crown that fits your tooth exactly. A custom-made temporary crown will be fitted over the prepared tooth until the new one is made.
The treatment takes at least two visits to the practice and possibly one visit to the laboratory to colour-match the new crown to your other teeth.
How long does the crown last?
Crowns can last for many years, provided good oral hygiene practices are followed. Pressure from biting and grinding teeth can affect their longevity. Talk to us about simple ways to extend the life of your crown.
